Countering the “dusty” image of the construction industry

At the event “Leave the dust behind” on June 26, 2019 at the DASA Arbeitswelt exhibition in Dortmund, the representatives of the “Minimizing Dust In Construction” association took stock of what had been achieved and presented the current status of low-dust technologies. Dorfner was on hand with the first building material funded by BG BAU, the low-dust crystal quartz sand from the DORSICOAT® product family, to present it to a curious specialist audience. Our company is one of the 22 alliance partners who work together to minimize dust in order to reduce health risks for employees and to increase the attractiveness of construction as a career.

As part of the event, contractors, craftsmen and vocational students had the opportunity to learn about the state of dust minimization in construction. This is important because dust not only damages the health of the employees, but also people in the surrounding area. According to the professional German Construction Trade Association, a fine, whirled up dust particle takes more than seven hours to fall back to the ground. It can be inhaled for just as long and – in worst-case scenarios – make you ill.

Younger people in particular should be encouraged to use low-dust techniques. Giving low-dust technologies an established place in the construction industry increases the attractiveness of these jobs, explained Norbert Kluger, head of the Material Hazards Department at BG BAU. The presentation of Joey Kelly was very fitting for this goal. The endurance athlete and entrepreneur, who is popular among young people, gave a guest talk under the day’s motto “No limits – but without dust”.
